As long as I’ve worked in journalism, telling stories about books and authors has been at the center of my career.

In August 2019, I founded Esquire Book Club, a monthly interview series highlighting essential reading and essential writers. In the five years I spent curating Esquire Book Club, I interviewed some of the greatest novelists of our time, including Stephen King, George Saunders, Colson Whitehead, Yiyun Li, and many more. I also spoke with brilliant nonfiction writers about the issues that matter most, from the future of work to the end of the world. In 2021, I expandedEsquire Book Club’s programming to include a monthly event series, leading me to interview writers at bookstores all around New York City; I’ve also hosted Esquire Book Club conversations on Twitter Spaces, where I’ve spoken live with writers like John Waters, Brandon Taylor, and Naomi Klein. Outside of Esquire Book Club, I’ve interviewed hundreds of authors who can help us understand the times we live in, whether that concerns labor, libraries, or men reading romance novels. I’ve been grateful to profile visionaries like Emily St. John Mandel and Patricia Lockwood, and I’ve cherished my conversations about literature and life with legendary storytellers like LeVar Burton, Amy Tan, and Karen Russell.

When I’m not interviewing authors, you can find me reporting on some of the biggest trends in books today, including the recent boom of mythology novels, the exodus of novelists to Substack, and the pandemic-era business model of bookselling. I also love to excavate literary history, whether it’s a long-shelved Richard Wright novel or the formative partnership between Esquire and Ernest Hemingway. And if there’s a wacky book story in the news, like John Steinbeck’s lost werewolf novel, Cormac McCarthy’s Twitter impersonator, or George R.R. Martin’s refusal to finish The Winds of Winter, you can bet I’ll be on the case.

Need a book recommendation while you’re here? I’ve always, always got book recommendations to share, whether you’re looking for short books, summer books, travel books, feminist books, science fiction books, or everything in between. During my time at Esquire, I also curated the magazine’s annual Best Books of the Year.
